who are we?
Unskew is a remote, student-run organization that aims to create informational resources encouraging individuals to be more thoughtful media consumers and political agents. We are passionate about promoting media literacy and giving people the awareness they need to combat media bias and misinformation. Unskew is funded and operated independently and does not endorse, market, or sell products, nor do we intend to profit from our content. Furthermore, we are devoted to giving other students free opportunities to showcase creative work through mediums such as our blog.
why media literacy?
Misinformation and extreme political bias are both increasingly pervasive in digital media, especially social media.¹ The digital spread of misinformation, such as falsities regarding vaccines during the COVID-19 pandemic, can have dire consequences for both the parties involved and society as a whole.² While structural changes to social media platforms and community-level action are needed to facilitate significant shifts, even small-scale digital media literacy interventions have shown promise at reducing misinformation spread.³ Literacy training and “pre-bunking” (debunking false info before it’s believed) have a real potential to curb the rapid spread of political and general misinformation and, thereby, reduce resulting extremist narratives.⁴
